How can foundations collectively demonstrate their value to decisionmakers at a regional level? And how can they mobilize their trustees as ambassadors for philanthropy?
Led by the Council of Michigan Foundations (Vicki Rosenberg and Rebecca Noricks), Philanthropy 3D-Michigan was a collaboration of CMF, the Community Research Institute at Grand Valley State University, Hattaway Communications and PAI. Fourteen participating CMF member foundations developed and tested a model for communicating the unique value of Michigan foundations to influential leaders in the state and engaged their trustees as the key ambassadors to do so.
Key elements of the project included a message manual developed by Hattaway Communications for use by trustees as well as executives and staff in outreach to their networks of influentials and a series of interviews with trustees conducted by CRI.
PAI will share lessons from this pilot effort in Michigan through its upcoming guide on promising foundation practices in partnership with Anne Green, to be released Spring 2011.
